Message from the Users Group Chairman

Husein Hasan

Tennessee Valley Authority

I would like to thank all of you who contributed to the success of our last meeting.  I would personally like to congratulate this year's "Award for Excellence" winner, Gianfranco Stella & Chiara Pozzuoli, CAD DATACONSULT Srl, for their presentation of the paper on "The Dynamic Behavior of the "Plazzo Lombardia" Building, the New Seat for the Regione Lombardia in Milan:  Comparison Between Numerical Model and Experimental Results."  You can view the details of this presentation by using the following link to the "Technical Papers" section of the GT STRUDL Website.  This website contains a library of technical papers that have been presented over the past few years and serves as an excellent resource of GT STRUDL technical information.

The Users Group works hand-in-hand with the GT STRUDL Research & Development Team of the Georgia Tech-CASE Center to serve as a technological pipeline for the engineering community.  Do not hesitate to contact the CASE Center or the Users Group Officers & Committee Chairpersons to find out how you can become an Active Member of the GT STRUDL Users Group community.

Here are just a few of the reasons to attend the next Annual Users Group Meeting & Training Seminar.  Get a first-hand introduction and demonstration of the "New Features" to be included in the next release.  See the latest GT STRUDL interfaces.  See technical presentations from GT STRUDL users around the world.  Learn the latest tips and techniques from the CASE Center experts.  Sit in on a committee breakout session where you will have an opportunity to give us your recommendations for new features or enhancements to GT STRUDL that will help set the course for its future development.  If it is time for you to renew your PE license, you can earn Professional Development Hours (PDH's) by participating in this meeting and attending the Training and Technical Sessions.  These are just a few of the reasons to get more involved and Become an Active Member of the GT STRUDL Users Group.

I hope that you will consider "Presenting a Paper" at the next Annual Meeting.  You can use the following link to view the "Call for Papers" for the 2012 meeting.   I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting.

"The Dynamic Behavior of the "Plazzo Lombardia" Building,

the New Seat for the Regione Lombardia in Milan:

Comparison Between Numerical Model and Experimental Results"

The ‘Palazzo Lombardia’ Tower, located in the heart of the city of Milan, has recently been completed. The new building, 161.30m high, is currently the tallest in Italy, and one of the strongest features of the skyline of the city for years to come.

Given the strategic importance and the strong impact of the new building, a series of dynamic excitation tests was carried out on the Tower, from which its basic modal features could be measured and compared to the same features as predicted by the finite element numerical analysis used for design.

The Mechanical Engineering Department of Politecnico di Milano was in charge of the design and execution of the tests. The tests provided experimental verification of the accuracy of the modeling assumptions and of the robustness and reliability of the FE model in predicting the behavior of the object as designed.

The comparison between tests and predictions was meant as a tool for early detection of possible construction inaccuracies or unexpected modifications with respect to the design.

Finally, the experimental validation of the FE model of the Tower was meant as the initial part of an intended continuous monitoring activity.

The FE model, implemented with GT STRUDL for static and dynamic analysis, is presented and the comparison between the numerically predicted and the experimentally derived modal properties are discussed.
